Russia protests over unsuitable site for Lollapalooza Berlin

The ambassadors to Germany from 10 former Soviet states have written to the mayor of Berlin asking that Lollapalooza Berlin not be allowed to go ahead in the city’s Treptower Park this September. In the letter, seen by the Berliner Kurier, diplomats from Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and seven former members of the USSR claim that holding the festival in the 100,000sqm park – which is also home to a war memorial commemorating 5,000 of the 80,000 soldiers of the Soviet empire who died in the Battle of Berlin in 1945 – is “inappropriate, unacceptable and disturbing for the honour and memory of the deceased”. Regional mayor Oliver Igel, Berlin mayor Michael Müller and senator of the interior Frank Henkel, say the memorial is far enough away that it will be secure from festival goers.

DEAG posts loss for 2015

Deutsche Entertainment AG (DEAG)’s financial results for 2015 were heavily impacted by the one-off expenses incurred by the launch of three new music festivals, according to its just-published 2015 annual report. The Berlin-based concert promoter reported an increase of revenue of 16 per cent, up from €172.6 million to €200.4 million. However, earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) decreased from €9.1m to a loss of €17.8m. The launch of the three festivals – Rock im Revier in the Ruhr district, Rockavaria in Munich and Rock in Vienna, headlined by Metallica, Muse and Kiss – amounted to around €23m in non-recurring expenditure.

RIP

Keith Emerson
Keith Emerson - founder and keyboardist of the rock group - Emerson, Lake and Palmer - has died at the age of 71. Police say he took his own life. Emerson played the keyboard in the group, who released nine studio albums during the 1970s.

The death has been announced of Christoph Schmökel, legal adviser to the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic orchestras and to many leading musicians and music companies. Most recently he advised the top-selling German-American violinist, David Garrett. Christoph died suddenly on April 4, his Berlin law firm has announced.

Gogi Grant, whose rendition of “The Wayward Wind” replaced Elvis Presley’s “Heartbreak Hotel” on top of the Billboard singles chart in 1956, died on Thursday at her home in Los Angeles. She was 91. Her death was announced by her family.

Steve Dillon, the bassist in Sondura, and " a brother, a tour buddy and above all the best friend anyone could ever wish for" has died. Steve passed away peacefully in his sleep after a suspected aneurysm, aged just 34. Band manager Steve Andrews said: “Steve was always more than just a member of Sondura – to us he was a friend, a brother and a family member and we are devastated by this loss. Everyone who knew Steve loved him and the incredible outpouring of messages and condolences on social media in the days after his death are testament to that fact, as is the shrine to him at the George in Andover"

Chip Hooper, Paradigm Talent's worldwide head of music has died aged just 53. Chip had battled cancer for four years. His clients included the Dave Matthews Band and Phish. He is survived by his son and daughter, Max and Valerie, their mother Laura, and his partner Tamara.
Percy Sledge

US soul singer Percy Sledge, famed for his song "When a Man Loves a Woman", has died aged 74. Steve Green from talent agency Artists International Management Inc confirmed to the BBC that he died at his home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Tuesday. Musician Bootsy Collins paid tribute on his Facebook page with the words: "Just lost another legend funkateers, Mr Percy Sledge."

Lady Melinda Rose Woodward, who was married to Sir Tom Jones for 59 years, has died at Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles after a 'short but fierce' battle with cancer. A statement on the singer's website said: 'Surrounded by her husband and loved ones, she passed away peacefully.' Tom and Linda had one son, Mark, who manages his career. Sir Tom had cancelled a series of shows in Japan, Thailand, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates due to 'serious illness in his immediate family.'

The influential Congolese musician Papa Wemba, the King of Rumba Rock, has died aged 66 after collapsing during a concert. His pioneering blend of African, Cuban and Western sounds became one of Africa's most popular music styles. Despite a short spell in prison in 2003 for an immigration scam, where he found God, Wemba also toured around the world, and worked with superstars Peter Gabriel and Stevie Wonder during his career.

Prince dies aged just 57

Prince (Prince Rogers Nelson) has died, his publicist has confirmed. The TMZ website had earlier reported that there had been a fatality at his Paisley Park estate in Minnesota, and later confirmed it was the 57-year-old musician.  Prince had been hospitalised the week before, with his private plane having to make an emergency landing in Illinois so the star could be treated for severe influenza on the way back from a gig in Atlanta. He later returned to home at Paisley Park and was able to appear on stage the following day. Prince became a global superstar in the 1980s, with albums such as 1999, Purple Rain and Sign O' the Times. He sold more than 100 million records during his career. A singer, songwriter, arranger and multi-instrumentalist, Prince recorded more than 30 albums. His best known hits include Let's Go Crazy and When Doves Cry. "Another Legend has gone".

The Music Millionaires top 50 is released today, ahead of the 28th annual Sunday Times Rich List to be published this weekend. Adele, Britain’s richest ever female musician, has benefited from the worldwide success of her long-awaited third album, 25, released last November. The London-born singer/songwriter is now hard on the heels of Ireland’s wealthiest female performer, Enya, who is worth £91m, up just £1m on 2015.

The Rolling Stones – Sir Mick Jagger, worth £235m; Keith Richards, £220m; Charlie Watts, £120m; and Ronnie Wood, £55m - with combined fortunes of £630m, up £40m on 2015, are the wealthiest band in Britain and Ireland, ahead of U2 with a joint fortune of £500m, an increase of £69m on the 2015 Sunday Times Music Rich List. The 2016 Sunday Times Music Rich List is headed by Sir Paul McCartney, who with his wife Nancy Shevell, shares a joint fortune of £760m, up £30m on last year. American-born Shevell has a £150m stake in her father’s New England Motor Freight trucking operation.

David Bowie’s widow and his filmmaker son by his first marriage to Angie, Iman Abdulmajid and Duncan Jones, join this year’s list with a joint family fortune of £90m, based on the £70m from Bowie’s will, their own wealth and royalties from the chart success of Bowie’s music after his death.
