BUMA deadlock until December

The royalty tariff for live concerts in the Netherlands for venues and promoters has still not been set, and BUMA Stemra's Supervisory Board has given the collection society more time to draw up a new proposal for the live industry for the rate payable for the use of songs at live events. The rate is currently 7% of gross ticket revenues - but more recently artistes discovered BUMA was rebating up to 25% to some promoters.

The supervisory board reviewing problems issues between Dutch royalty collection society BUMA Stemra, including an expired deal with promoters and venues and claims for recompense over “kickbacks”, has rejected the new rate offer from the organisation and has told Buma Stemra to re-open talkns with promiters and venues.  Alongside the royalty rate impasse, the UK’s Music Manager’s Forum (MMF) is pressing BUMA for recompense for its members’ artiste clients who lost out when BUMA refunded up to 25% of monies collected for writers and music publishers to some to promoters and venues, which reportedly has been ruled invalid by the Board. The Board's deliberations continue.

Buma-Stemra 'kickbacks' evidence to be heard

Parties involved in the BUMA Stemra performance royalty “kickbacks” dispute are due to give evidence at supervisory board hearing in Amsterdam. Not only does BUMA have no current collection agreement with Dutch promoters and venues – it expired on 1 January, but the managers of artistes such as Mark Knopfler and Nick Cave have bypassed the body to collect royalties direct from the promoter.
